HO! HO! HO! TENTH ANNUAL HOLIDAY CONTEST

It’s time for the Tenth Annual Holiday Contest hosted by Susanna Leonard Hill. Write a children’s holiday story under 250 words about a ‘holiday helper’. You can learn more here. I wasn’t sure if I would get this done in time, but here is my entry. I hope you like it. Thank you, Susanna!

BETTER THAN A SNOW GLOBE

242 words

Elizabeth forgot to blink. She was focused on packing and shaping the snow. Her mitts were sopping but it was worth it. She hugged her new Snowman tight.

Carefully, she placed the special blue cape around his neck. Then she waited.

The street was quiet. She looked up as fat snowflakes landed on her lashes. She felt like she was in her own little snow globe.

The cape rustled.
A flurry of snow kicked up.
And … POOF!
Snowman winked.

“Aaah!” said Elizabeth, falling back. “Gets me every time!”

She picked herself up.

“Ready, Snowman? Let’s go see.”

They pulled their sleds up the hill, where Ms. Bumble lived. Her front door usually stayed closed on snowy days. Today it was open and there she stood.

“I was wondering … ,” said Elizabeth.

“Yes!” Ms. Bumble said, tapping her walking cane in the snow.

Ms. Bumble sat carefully on one sled and tossed her cane aside. Elizabeth sat on the other and inched forward. They teetered on the edge. Ms. Bumble gave a nod.

One more inch. They slid down the hill, Snowman alongside them. Faster and faster they went.

Ms. Bumble shrieked and laughed.
Elizabeth hooted and hollered.
Snowman whistled.

There was only Elizabeth and Ms. Bumble once they reached the bottom.

“Merry Christmas,” said Elizabeth.

Ms. Bumble’s blue eyes looked up at the falling snowflakes.

“Thank you, Lizzy.”

“Thank you, Ms. Bumble. You’re right … the best gifts are the ones you can’t wrap.”

  1. That’s adorable! I love the image of Mrs. Bumble and Elizabeth flying down the hill on the sled.
